Collaboration…when artists explore together
The Whittier Art Gallery’s first exhibition of the New Year showcases eleven Southern California artists who primarily work with fabrics and textiles. The exhibition gives us a glimpse of what can happen when independent artists explore working collaboratively.
The show is based on inspirations that the artists experienced together in one of three separate collaborative groups. The inspirations for the art pieces were drawn from collages, still lifes, words or artists’ journals. Each artist took the inspirations and executed personal, individual pieces of art. The show is exhibited in groupings with the inspiration.
You can meet the artists and talk to them about their work at the reception on January 11th from 2:30-5pm. Or you can discuss the artwork or collaboration on January 15th, 2014 at 1:00pm with artist Joanell Connolly or January 25th, 2014 at 2:00pm with artist Jeanette Kelly at the Whittier Art Gallery.
For this show, the artists joined together to produce a body of work based upon collaboration. Individually their credits include gallery and museum shows, exhibitions in public buildings, art festivals, textile and art quilt exhibitions. Many have had work published in books and trade magazines. Their art can be found in individual, institutional and corporate collections.
The artists exhibiting are Laurie Bucher, Peggy L. Calvert, Cynthia Catlin, Joanell Connolly, Cindy Cooksey, Stacy Hurt, Jeanette Kelly, Sharon Oblinger, Vickie Valdez-Green, Deborah Weir and Susan Willen.
Collaboration runs from Jan 8 – Feb. 2, 2014
