Got Art? Don’t Miss Artist Demonstrations at the Whittier Public Library this weekend!

Whittier Art Gallery History at Public Library

Whittier, California , October 4, 2011 — More than seven decades of the rich and varied history of the Whittier Art Gallery are on display in the Nixon Room of the Whittier Central Branch Library, now through October 29th, 2011.

Archival photographs and documents are shown describing the Gallery’s beginnings in 1939 and tracing its progress to the present day, in the exhibit titled “Got Art?” Also shown are many paintings, ceramics, and other works by current Gallery members.

“Noted artists, such as Millard Sheets, Milford Zornes, Edgar Payne, Taro Yashima, James Cooper Wright, Ralph Hulett, Conrad Buff, Karl Yens, and Donna Schuster have exhibited, taught, or lectured at our Gallery over the years. Norman Rockwell judged a show at the Whittier Gallery in 1945,” says, Vicki Schramm, artist and Gallery Board member.

Schramm continues, “Researching the Gallery’s archives for this presentation has been mesmerizing! There were so many documents and photographs in our files; the exhibit only shows a small fraction of the available information.”

The public is encouraged to attend a reception for the exhibit that will be held in the Nixon Room on Saturday, October 8th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Mimi Wang, right, Director of the Hsi Lai Temple Art Gallery of Hacienda Heights, is joined by Michael Tyler, Whittier Art Gallery President, in admiring the Gallery’s display of its history and art works in the Nixon Room, Whittier Public Library Central Branch. The exhibit runs through October 29.

Vicki Schramm, left, and Judy Jansen, artists and Whittier Art Gallery volunteers, hang archival photographs and documents next to present day art works in the Nixon Room, Whittier Public Library Central Branch. The Gallery’s display of its history and art runs through October 29.

Artist demonstrations will be offered at the exhibit on Saturday, October 22nd, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Whittier Central Library is located at 7344 S. Washington Avenue, Whittier, at the corner of Mar Vista Street .
