Eaton Canyon Pine by Holly Overin

“Eaton Canyon is a foothill park in Altadena not far from [my] home. A wonderful place to hike up to creeks and falls. There are some magnificent trees along the way. Many of them must be hundreds of years old.” — Holly Overin

Holly Overin is a Whittier, CA native and local business owner. She has been re-creating animal life and nature in various art mediums for as long as she can remember. Artistic self-expression was greatly encouraged by her ‘ plein air’ painter/mother, Janet Church. Holly learned to respect the fundamentals of drawing, painting and sculpture as laid down by master artists of the Renaissance, 19th and 20th century. Observing classical works on museum outings, watching her mother paint, and joining her in nature, activated an enthusiasm in utilizing oils and watercolors to record the rapidly disappearing southern California landscape where she grew up.

Holly teaches adults and children the tools of art. Her method, handed down to her by her mother, artist Janet Church, helps students understand how to convey form, impressionist color harmonies, composition and perspective in oils.

Whittier Public Library Program “Women and Art,” February 2010

The Whittier Public Library is planning a dynamic program titled “Women and Art,” scheduled for the entire month of February, 2010.

We are seeking local women artists who are interested in exhibiting their work in the Nixon Room at the Whittier Central Library. We are also seeking any women artists who would be interested in participating in a panel discussion on the ways in which they have or have not been able to incorporate their art into their presumably busy lives.

The program will culminate in a screening of the popular documentary film “Who Does She Think She Is,” by Academy Award Winner Pamela Tanner Boll. The film discusses the underrepresentation of women in the art world, and tells the stories of five women artists who each contend with this underrepresentation in different ways.

All events will be free and open to the public.

Please direct any questions from artists interested in participating in the program to Erin Fletcher, Additionally, they can speak in person to Vivian Vellanoweth at the Central Library, or email her as well at April 2010 Show at the Whittier Art Gallery
